Emeritus Pope,Benedict XVI

Germany’s Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected the 265th pope of the Roman Catholic Church on 19 April, 2005. He  retired on February 28, 2013 because his age prevented him from carrying out his duties, an unprecedented move in the modern history of the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict XVI basked in an emotional sendoff at his final general audience in St. Peter’s Square, recalling moments of "joy and light" during his papacy but also times of great difficulty.
The pope took this historic step of becoming the first pontiff in six centuries to step down instead of ruling for life.
